Dr. Sangmin Shin has a variety of work and educational experience. He was born in Busan South Korea, and studied Physics at Seoul National University, the top university in the country and received a degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) there, and engaged in the research field of Samsung Electronics. As a physicist and engineer, he learned strong scientific fundamentals, which have affected his knowledge and attitude since he switched careers to dentistry (DDS, Doctor of Dental Surgery) at Seoul National University.

 

Dentistry needs more evidence to support clinicians’ choice to improve their methods to benefit their patients. His background fits very well into this ‘evidence-based’ dentistry and he has dedicated his energy to more predictable, reproducible, and comfortable treatment outcomes for patients.

As a scientist and clinician, he has been well appreciated by patients when he had his own clinic in Seoul, South Korea. Even though his goal was to save patients’ natural teeth , he has done more than 1,000 dental implants for patients who had no other choice. He recognized all variables necessary for success in implants and has become confident in providing safe and predictable implant.

After he came to Canada and worked as an associate dentist for 3 years, he realized a growing demand for implants, and decided to set up his own implant-focusing clinic in North Vancouver, near his home, and in the most populated neighborhood of Greater Vancouver. Dr. Shin’s motto on implants is “Safe and Economical(SAFECO)” implant.

 

Nonetheless, he and his staff are eager to see all patients with any needs. He is also focusing on non or less invasive treatments on tooth cavities and gum diseases, and is researching some technological innovations in those fields. He is now collaborating with KAIST, the top engineering university in South Korea, to develop several dental devices which give more comfort and less pain to patients.

Dr. Shin is a member of the Canadian Dental Association and an organizer of Maple Study Club, where his BC colleagues discuss in-depth knowledge of comprehensive  periodontics, prosthodontics, implantology, and orthodontics treatments. He is also taking continuing education in all phases of dentistry.

Dr. Shin graciously shares his expertise by volunteering to the less fortunate. He visits the Philippines once every year to do this. He feels that he must give back to global society since he had the opportunities of higher education, professional reputation, and immigration to Canada.

Dr. Shin lives in Lynn Valley, North Vancouver with his wife, Jasmine, and their three sons. Jasmine was a medical doctor in Korea and is now a medical esthetician in Canada.
